 Sarah Janney

Sarah Janney [nee Carter] is a French-born American physicist, pilot, college professor, government agent and military commander, best known as the central figure in the Trojan War described in the Ancient Greek poet Homer’s epic poem “The Iliad” and for inspiring a number of eponymous characters in the works of English playwright William Shakespeare, most notably in his 1595 comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

Carter’s early years are shrouded in a carefully-guarded enigma, with the first historical record of her emerging when she was arranged to be married to the Roman Emperor Constantius I in the Fourth Century CE.  A long-time field agent for her mother Hera Day’s international Warehouse Network--later renamed the National Security Department Intelligence Agency--under the codename “Walker”, Carter joined the United States Army Aeronautical Division in 1909 as a Lieutenant Colonel, rising to the Rank of Colonel in the United States Army Air Forces by 1942, and later joined the United States Air Force upon its founding in 1947.

While still an active duty pilot with the Air Force, Carter became Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of California--Los Angeles in 1979. While on sabbatical from UCLA working for the Department of National Security and Defense’s Advanced Research Project Agency [DARPA] in Eugene, Oregon in 2042, Carter met and befriended Katherine Janney, the teenage daughter of a United States Senator. Carter first came into the public eye when Janney began a campaign for the United States House of Representatives in 2056. When Janney moved to Washington, District of Columbia, Carter took a position at the Pentagon to help her girlfriend raise their then-teenage daughter Julia Allen, an arrangement that continued into her role as First Lady of the United States when Janney won the 2060 Presidential election. President Janney appointed her girlfriend Secretary of the Air Force for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. The President was forced by a Congressional Investigation to dishonorably discharge her girlfriend from the United States military in 2063 when Carter’s actions as an agent for the NSDIA during the first Cold War were publicly brought to light during a televised hearing by Janney’s opponent in the election, Senate Minority Leader Nathan Sedwicks.

Carter and Janney were married in 2064 and Carter became the first First Lady of the Unified Federated States of Earth, founded by Janney.

When Janney retired from politics after two terms as Federation President, Carter withdrew from public life with her and the two live at Janney’s ancestral estate of Chateau Villette outside the Federation Capital and Carter’s birthplace, Paris, France.

Early Life

Helena Trois was born in 45th Century BCE the only child daughter of Herat-Kau, ruler of the ancient city of Ilium [now called Paris] built on the banks of the Seine River in Gaul [modern-day France]. Her mother Hera has kept her father’s identity a carefully guarded secret. Sometime prior to the 34th century BCE, the young Helena fell under the influence of her mother’s younger sister Aphrodite, secretly the leader of race of dangerous superpowers beings calling themselves the “Sydhe” [commonly colloquially referred to as “vampires], having assumed the pseudonym “Hathor''. Hathor sought to turn Helena, born the most powerful of her mother’s kind [known as the “Asgard] into a weapon to wield against her older sister Hera in order to overthrow her and seize the throne of the Asgard for herself. While the young Helena did not yet know the full extent of her powers, the same could not be said for her mother and when Hera discovered Aphrodite’s manipulation of her impressionable daughter, Hathor proved herself wise enough to exile herself from Ilium, fleeing to the Sydhe stronghold of Abydos [now Giza, Egypt] in lieu of forcing a direct face-face confrontation with her much more powerful sibling.

However, Hera did not discover Hathor, a powerful telepath, or her brainwashing of Helena quite early enough, and so a touch of her wicked Aunt Hathor’s darkness would remain buried in the back of Helena’s subconscious for the rest of her life. Fearing Hathor’s darkness combined with Helena’s powers, Hera made the heart wrenching choice to institute a policy of periodically suppressing her daughter’s memories behind telepathically-implanted mental blockages every couple of centuries, and/or whenever Helena discovered one or more of her superpowers. This permitted Helena to start over fresh and over the next few millennia, Helena lived quite literally dozens of different lifetimes.

The one constant throughout was that she always worked as an agent of her mother, who had established the first of what grew into a network of facilities [referred to nondescriptly as inconspicuous “Warehouses''] in the city of Alexandria in Ptolemaic Egypt—earning Hera notoriety in the worldwide underworld throughout the centuries since under the deceptively civilian-sounding  moniker of “The Librarian''. Hera’s primary use for her favorite agent was to utilize Helena’s inherent but still-latent telepathic powers to infiltrate numerous royal and imperial courts throughout Eurasia.

Most famously, Gera had her daughter installed as Empress of the already-splintering Roman Empire, in which capacity Helena made the history books by famously playing the role of maternal figure to a young Roman aristocrat who would, under Helena’s careful guidance, grow up to become Emperor Constantine I the Great, who unified the Roman Empire under the up and coming Abrahamic monotheistic religion of Christianity and moved its capital city from Rome to the Ancient Greek fortress of Byzantium, which he—like Alexander the Great a millennium before—renamed after himself: “Constantinople”.

Helena, for her part, worked primarily out of the fifth of these Warehouses, referred to within Hera’s organization as “the Sanctuary” and constructed deep underneath what was then the royal palace of the Kings and Queens of France, known as the “Louvre”. Working out of what was, albeit unbeknownst to her, her own birthplace of Paris, Hera’s favorite Warehouse agent went by the name of “Helena Truffaut”.

Education

Following the Hundred Years War, Hera buried the Sanctuary and moved the headquarters of her growing Warehouse network to the seventh Warehouse, constructed under Westminster Abbey in the capital city of what was soon to become the globe-spanning British Empire. From her headquarters in the dead center of downtown London, Helena was taken in as the muse of an aspiring playwright and poet in Elizabethan England named William Shakespeare. Like Homer had before him in writing of Ilium, Shakespeare named a number of characters in his plays ``Helena” after his muse.

Helena’s work with Shakespeare—who is widely credited with inventing, or at the very least revolutionizing—the English language as we know it today—inspired Hera to send her daughter to school. Unlike her mother, Helena remained ignorant of the Asgard’s extraterrestrial origins, but nevertheless showed a preternatural aptitude for astronomy, cosmology, and what would centuries later be the new science of astrophysics. She studied under the inaugural Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge University’s Trinity College, Sir Isaac Newton, who handed her a doctorate in the discipline and field of physics, which Newton himself had invented with his theory of universal gravitation and laws of motion

Following the beginning of the dissolution of the British Empire with the successful revolution staged by England’s North American colonies in 1776-1789, Hera worked with the new-formed country’s third President Thomas Jefferson—author of the Colonies’ Declaration of Independence and co-author of the Bill of Rights to its Constitution—on scouting out a location for a tenth Warehouse, the new and permanent headquarters of her now-worldwide Warehouse network. Jefferson entrusted this task to one of his closest friends, a fellow polymath linguist and naturalist named Merriweather Lewis

Nearly a century later, one of Jefferson’s successors as President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, secretly inaugurated Hera’s Warehouse network as the “National Security Department Intelligence Agency''. Meanwhile, Helena, from her headquarters under Westminster Abbey, insinuated herself as the handmaiden and soon secret lesbian lover of the teenage Queen of the British Empire, named Victoria. Working under the dual identities of “Helena Carter” and “Helena Wells”, her exploits as a Warehouse agent provided inspiration for a London medical physician and aspiring novelist named Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Publishing his only barely-fictionalized accounts of Helena’s adventures as stories in the “Strand” magazine, Doyle was forced by the conventions of Victorian Britain to change the gender of his character; a detective with Helena’s genius deductive intellect: “Sherlock Holmes”.

While working at the London Warehouse, the woman calling herself Helena Wells developed a mutual infatuation with one of her mother’s fellow Warehouse agents and a fellow genius—level intellect,  a young up and coming inventor from Serbia named Nikola Tesla. Her mother disapproved of this relationship and in 1869 when a President Lincoln’s General in the American Civil War, Ulysses Grant, completed a transcontinental railroad in what would become Utah, Hera brought Tesla over to America to work on the new headquarters of the NSDIA and the Warehouse Network--an underground city named “Eureka'' in honor of the ancient Greek engineer and inventor Archimedes, an agent at Hera’s first Warehouse in Alexandria--in a neighboring territory that would come to called “Nevada''. Upon completion of Warehouse Ten, Tesla was made its first Head of House, replacing his more accomplished rival, pioneering electrician and prolific American inventor Thomas Edison

United States Government Service

As part of an effort to recruit the best and brightest in the world as new Warehouse Agents, in the 1890’s, Hera made sure that the 1488 sketches for a flying machine of former Italian Warehouse Agent Leonardo Da Vinci found their way into the hands of German engineer Wilhelm Lilienthal and aspiring American engineers Orville and Wilbur Wright, after unsuccessfully doing the same with French engineer Alphonse Pénaud. Following Lilienthal’s death in an unsuccessful attempt to replicate Da Vinci’s glider in 1896, the Wright Brothers successfully constructed Da Vinci’s original design--thereafter comoonly colloquially referred to as the “Wright Flyer”--and tested it at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina between 1903 and 1911.

In 1907, the United States Army established an Aeronautical Division and acquired its first Wright Brothers airplane in August 1909.

Helena Wells had finally been allowed into Eureka in 1905 after Hera ensured that the technology at Shoreham, Long Island that Tesla had reverse engineered from the Warehouse failed, and the NSDIA Director enlisted her daughter in the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1909 under the name Samantha Connor. Helena loved flying as much as she did astronomy, and by 1912 she was already proficient on the the Wright Company’s Models C and D. Connor remained a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army’s new Aviation Section starting in 1914, flying with the British Army’s Royal Flying Corps in the First World War before the United States’ entry in 1917. In 1918, the Royal Flying Corps became the Royal Air Force and Connor carried over her rank into the United States Army’s new Air Service

Hera made Tesla’s competitor Philo Farnsworth the head of Warehouse Ten in 1928 and in 1931, President of the United States Herbert Hoover began construction on a hydroelectric dam on the Colorado River in Nevada, exploding the population of city of Las Vegas, a mere ninety miles from Warehouse Ten’s location at Groom Lake. Hera began construction on a Casino, the Serapeum--named after the Ptolemaic Museum at the Library of Alexandria--that would serve as a field post for Warehouse agents in their effort to control the Prohibition-era explosion of organized criminal syndicates in the United States including the Chicago-based SouthSide Outfit of New York-born racketeer Alphonse Capone. Hera worked with Bureau of Investigation [later FBI] Director John Edgar Hoover and Agent Eliot Ness to have Capone arrested for tax evasion and imprisoned on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. There, Capone was diagnosed with tertiary neurosyphilis, caused by herpes meningoencephalitis, and transferred to John Hopkins in Baltimore for treatment of paralytic dementia in 1939.

Connor earned a name for herself flying with the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain against the Luftwaffe of Nazi German Chancellor Adolf Hitler, during which she earned the admiration and awe of her male Bitish counterparts by shooting down more German aircraft than the rest of the RAF combined. Part of Connor’s success rate was her ability to be shot down herself and survive thanks to her Asgardian regeneration abilities. This was especially true during the fiercest fighting of the London Blitz of 1940-1941, during which Connor, under order from her mother, fought tooth and nail to defend Westminster Abbey, a primary target of Hitler’s forces, and the Warehouse underneath it.

After the entry of the United States into the Second World War in December 1941, Connor was promoted to the rank of full Colonel in the newly-founded United States Air Force in March 1942.

Working as a top-secret agent for her mother’s NSDIA, Walker managed to remain undercover in German-occupied Paris. To do this, Helena employed the aide of the Saint Chlaire family of Chateau Villette--the last of the Merovingian dynasties, human descendants of Hera’s older half-brother Janus, most of who had been hunted down and systematically exterminated by François Marie Isidore Robespierre during his “Reign of Terror'' following the French Revolution of 1789--a family whose wealth was spared from plundering by the invading Nazis due to their lineage. Special Agent Walker also helped Alan Turing, head of the London Warehouse, to break the Nazi’s Enigma encrpytion.  During the preparations of American Supreme Commander Dwight Eisenhower’s “Operation Overlord” in June 1944, Walker worked covertly in Normandy, France with her ex-flame Nikola Tesla, who had faked his own death in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan a year earlier in 1943. Following the liberation of Paris in August 1944 and the defeat of Adolf Hitler in May 1945, Helena was present for the birth of the newest matriarch of the Sainte Chlaire Dynasty, named Roseline, in 1946.

Super-Spy

In 1951, however, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics [USSR] under Joseph Stalin conquered Berlin, and Walker once more became a top-secret agent for her mother’s globe-spanning NSDIA network in the the new “Cold War'' between the USSR and the United States. In 1953, Walker’s exploits as a Secret Agent operating out of the the London Warehouse inspired a one of Turing’s coworkers on the Enigma code operation, a now-former British Naval Intelligence Officer named Ian Fleming, to create his own fictional agent of the British Secret Intelligence Service [commonly known as MI6]. Like Conan Doyle a century earlier, Fleming was once again forced by the conventions of the time to change the gender of the super-spy he created, giving the character in his first novel, “Casino Royale”, the nondescript name of “James Bond”.

In 1961, the USSR, under Stalin’s successor Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev, cemented its control over East Germany by erecting a wall dissecting downtown Berlin, making manifest the “Iron Curtain” that had fallen over Eastern Europe. In 1963, the teenage Roseline Saint Chlaire met and fell in love with a young refugee from Soviet-occupied East Berlin named Maximilian Rhozenko. At the same time, a powerful potential competitor to Hera’s Warehouse network began to emerge in an up and coming American industrialist magnate named Sebastian Stark, who built his company, Stark Industries, out of his mansion in Malibu, Orange County, California. Following the assasination that year of American President John Kennedy, Hera began to become concerned about Kennedy’s rival, former California Republican Senator Richard Nixon, and his designs on the escalating American war in the Southeast Asian rainforest nation of Vietnam. When Nixon announced his candidacy for the 1968 Presidential election, Hera ordered her best covert agent, her daughter Walker, to break into the Pentagon and sabotage now-President-elect Nixon’s plans to use America’s exponentially-multiplying arsenal of thermonuclear warheads to conquer not only North Vietnam, but China and North Korea. This operation had genuinely eerie echoes four years later when Nixon sought reelection, ordering his own operatives to perform a strikingly similar break-in of the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters at Washington’s Watergate Hotel.

Remaining an active-duty pilot with the United States Air Force, Colonel Connor proved instrumental in both the formation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1958 and the fulfillment of President Kennedy’s pledge to land an American man on the surface of the moon and return him safely to Earth in July 1969. Strong speculation by many has been published that either Hera, her daughter or some combination of both, proved the inspiration for Canadian television producer Sydney Cecil Newman in the 1963 creation of his fictional “Time Lord” titular character for the British Broadcasting Corporation’s science fiction serial “Doctor Who”. [Due to her numerous postgraduate degrees from the earliest Universities in Europe between 1090 and 1481, Hera Day is known in the Intelligence Community by the moniker of “The Doctor].

In 1971, Roseline Saint Chlaire and Maximilian Rhozenko married and immigrated to New York City, where Roseline’s son Alexander was born in 1984.

Academia

With Nixon safely out of power and as the First Cold War wound towards its conclusion, in 1979 Helena was finally able to come out of the shadows, using her Doctorate in Physics from Cambridge--and the name she earned it under: “Sarah Carter”--to become Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of California--Los Angeles and Director of the Griffith Park Observatory in the Hollywood hills. She took up permanent residence in a top-floor loft Suite of apartments in the Wilshire Grand Hotel

In the early 1990’s, while working daily at the University, Sarah took up a hobby of vigilante criminal justice as a superhuman crimefighter in Los Angeles known in the press only as “Walker''. Her superheroine exploits brought her into conflict with Sebastian Stark’s grandson and heir to Stark Industries, a young up and coming genius inventor and multibillionaire military contractor named Anthony Stark. Like his grandfather before him, Stark became obsessed with the secrets of the Warehouse, but more specifically Walker herself. In the early 21st Century, unbeknownst to Helena, Stark managed to obtain her DNA and used technology he invented to combine it with his own to create a child he then had implanted into his unsuspecting wife through the couple’s in vitro fertilization efforts, producing a daughter named Zoe.

Meeting Katherine Janney

Meanwhile, after moving to Boston, Massachusetts, Roseline Saint Chlaire’s son Alexander met and married the daughter of an Irish immigrant family named Patricia Janney. The couple settled onto an estate in New Boston, New Hampshire and Alexander was elected to the United States Senate from the State in 2016. Their first daughter, Maryline, was born in Berlin, New Hampshire the following year. Their second daughter, Caroline, was born in 2021 and a third, Katherine Alexandra Janney, was born in Manchester on June 6, 2024, on the 80th Anniversary of Operation Overlord’s invasion of Normandy.

When Hera discovered that Anthony Stark had obtained Asgardian DNA and created a child with it, for the first time in centuries, she grounded her own daughter, sending Sarah to Eugene, Oregon to babysit Patricia Janney’s three daughters after Patricia divorced her husband in 2032. With Maryline moving to Los Angeles to marry a police officer with the LAPD and Caroline going off to law School at Harvard, by 2040, Sarah’s supervisor duties soon became focused solely and exclusively on the baby of the family, then-16-year-old Katherine.

The two shared their first-ever kiss at a party the summer before Katherine’s senior year of high school, and after Katherine began her Political Science degree at the nearby University of Oregon, Sarah hired the brilliant young woman as her Administrative Secretary at the Clackamas College Haggart Observatory near Portland, beginning a physical sexual relationship.

Return to Eureka

However, shortly before her graduation, Katherine discovered Helena’s latent telepathic abilities and that she had been subconsciously using them to brainwash and manipulate the young woman--an echo of Helena’s own seduction at the hands of her Aunt Hathor thousands of years before--and the two broke up acrimoniously, with Katherine following her older sister Caroline to Harvard Law School and Helena returning to Eureka and Warehouse Ten in Nevada.

Profoundly concerned by what would have been, in any mortal, suicidal depression, Hera partnered her daughter with a young lawyer from the Central Intelligence Agency named James Prichardson. As Tesla had a century and an half before, Prichardson developed feelings for the beautiful NSDIA Special Agent Walker through their five year partnership, but upon discovering her superhuman abilities and forcing her mother to restore the blocked memories of her many lifetimes, Helena found herself unable to reciprocate his attraction, explaining to her partner that, while he could easily spend the rest of his natural life with her, there was no way for her to spend her immortal life with him. Heartbroken, Prichardson demanded a permanent transfer out of Eureka and Hera obliged, giving the agent his last and permanent assignment: To covertly play shadow bodyguard to a young recent Harvard graduate and attorney in Oregon by the name of Katherine Janney.

After taking weeks alone atop Papoose Mountain to master her newly-rediscovered telekinetic powers, Helena came to a decision to try to win Katherine--the woman she loved---back.

A New Definition of Family

Showing up to Janney’s Portland law office on Thanksgiving Day, 2052, Sarah discovered the true damage wrought by her earlier--albeit unconscious--telepathic manipulations, as Katherine confessed to her that she felt she could not now trust her own thoughts or emotions to be either her own or someone else’s. However, even in the wake of the deep-seated emotional pain wreaked by the recent breakup  of her engagement with the boyfriend she had proposed to back at Harvard, Katherine also tearfully admitted that she had never truly stopped loving Sarah.

Sarah’s presence in Katherine’s life stabilized the young woman emotionally and psychologically just in time for the couple to adopt the child of Katherine’s older sister Maryline and her husband Benjamin Gates--both recruited from the LAPD into the European Union Intelligence Bureau--an eight-year old San Francisco native named Julia Gates-Allen.

The Krusztcheckova Case

After years of building a home for their daughter in Portland as a working mother, Katherine Janney’s life was turned upside down and inside out when she took up the case of her childhood friend Nastassia, the daughter of recently-assassinated President of the Russian Federation Mikhail Krusztcheckov. Krusztchekov’s assassin, his older brother Ivan Lyman Gorbzerga, sought to usurp the Russian Presidency--made hereditary by the reforms following the death of Russia’s long-time dictator, former KGB Commander Vladimir Putin--by systematically killing off his nephews one by one until only the youngest, Mikhail’s only daughter Nastassia, remained alive. Nastassia Krusztcheckova, her father’s handpicked heiress and educated by her father in the United States, sought out her old childhood friend Katherine Janney. Janney, recognizing the potential international incident brewing in the streets of downtown Portland, enlisted the aide of one of her own former clients, another childhood friend from Malibu, California named Zoe Stark.

The resulting confrontation with the Gorbzerga-controlled Russian “Bratva'' mafia reunited Sarah with her former partner James Prichardson as they both fought alongside Katherine Janney--whom both harbored feelings for--in defense of Krusztcheckova.

Emboldened by her success defeating the Bratva and having Gorbzerga arrested by INTERPOL and put on trial at the Hague, attorney Katherine Janney, with her girlfriend Sarah by her side, announced her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives from Oregon’s First Congressional District in the 2056 Congressional elections.

Return to Government Service

In an effort to give their daughter a normal life in Washington, District of Columbia, Sarah took a leave of absence from UCLA and stepped down from active service in the Air Force in order to take a desk job as a Brigadier General at the Pentagon. Both she and young Julia became regular sightings in the halls of the Rayburn House Office Building. With her Doctorate in Geopolitical Sociology from Harvard’s John Kennedy School of Government, Congresswoman Katherine Janney rose meteorically through the ranks of the Democratic-Republican caucus to become ranking member on the House Foreign Intelligence Services Committee and Committee on Science, Space and Technology, being introduced by her mentor, Senator Josieph Kickland of Illinois, to his friend Jonathan Whitford and quickly becoming a favorite of the President.

With Julia starting her Sophomore Year at Washington’s Yorktown High School, under Principal Estelle Mackenzie, Janney declared her candidacy for the Democratic-Republican nomination in the 2060 Presidential election.

Early on, before the first Primary debate that fall, Janney’s campaign was thrown into almost immediate turmoil by the death of Katherine’s beloved grandmother Roseline Saint Chlaire, a loss felt equally powerfully by the Congresswoman’s girlfriend. With Katherine’s father having taken his wife’s name to run for the Senate in New Hampshire, Roseline’s passing marked the end of a Saint Chlaire dynasty that dated back literally thousands of years to the fall of the Ancient Roman Empire. With the republican reforms of French General Charles De Gaulle after the Second World War, the end of the Saint Chalire family of Chateau Villette also marked the death of the final matriarch of a Merovingian dynasty.

But just as one dynasty was ending, another was being reborn, as Nastassia Krustcheckova proposed to her girlfriend Zoe Stark, revealing that she was, in fact, a direct descendant of her namesake Anastasia Romanov, killed as an adolescent alongside her father the last Czar of Russia in the Red Revolution of July 1918 but secretly cloned in infancy in June 1901 by none other than Warehouse Agent Nikola Tesla. With Stark’s marriage to the Russian President, the Janney campaign lost its largest single donor, but became self-financed with the fortune Katherine--like her two older sisters--inherited from their late grandmother Roseline.

Katherine Janney made headlines as not only the youngest but also the first-ever bachelorette nominee of a major political Party in American history, but made it unmistakably clear that she and the woman she loved came as a packaged deal. Her rival was Nathan Sedwicks, the Conservative New Jersey Senator, a protege of her father Alexander, who had facilitated the entry of Ivan Gorbzerga’s Bratva assassins into the United States. Compounded with Katherine’s resentment for her father for rejecting her relationship with the woman she loved and for denying her sexuality even as a child, this made the “Janney For America” Presidential campaign an intensely personal one for both the Oregon Congresswoman and her girlfriend, ending in one of the largest electoral landslides in the history of American politics on Tuesday November 6, 2060. .

First Family

Marriage had been an issue of some contention between the couple on the campaign trail, but even though Katherine accepted Sarah’s reasons for not wanting to get married, her girlfriend had nevertheless become a second mother to their daughter Julia and so became what a newspaper covering President-elect Janney’s inauguration on January 21, 2061 called America’s first-ever “de-facto First Lady at large without portfolio”.
